Battery Point Distillery
Small batch single malt
from historic Hobart.
Crafting Tasmanian single malt whisky in the heart of Battery Point since 2014. Led by Head Distiller Luke Lawrence, we double-distil our spirit and mature it in carefully sourced sherry, tawny and bourbon casks. Every bottle carries the character of our historic home at Lenna of Hobart.
Gold Medal — World Whisky Awards 2025
The story behind the spirit
Why the world’s
next great whisky
region is an island.
Tasmania sits at the bottom of the world, battered by the Roaring Forties and fed by some of the planet’s purest water. For whisky, it turns out, this is exactly where you want to be.
Climate & Maturation
Cold winters. Warm summers.
The cask does the rest.
Maturation is the single greatest driver of flavour in any whisky. In Scotland, the cool, stable climate means spirit moves in and out of the wood slowly — gradually picking up colour, complexity and character over many years. It is a patient process, and it produces outstanding whisky.
Tasmania works differently. The island’s four distinct seasons create significant temperature swings across the year. In summer, warming spirit expands deep into the wood, extracting colour, tannin and flavour compounds. In winter, it contracts back. The cask breathes harder and more often — and the spirit develops faster as a result.
This is not a shortcut. It is a different climate producing a different, but equally legitimate, style of whisky.
6–8 Years to full maturity in Tasmanian climate | 12+ Years typically required in Scottish conditions |
42°S Latitude — same band as Patagonia & New Zealand | 0.00% Industrial pollution in Tasmanian air |
The Four Pillars of Tasmanian Whisky
| 1 | Water Tasmania’s water comes from ancient dolerite catchments, naturally filtered through some of the oldest rock on earth. Exceptionally pure, low in minerals, and used untreated. |
| 2 | Grain Tasmanian barley is grown with minimal chemical inputs, locally malted, and high in quality — giving our spirit a richness that carries through to the final whisky. |
| 3 | Climate Four true seasons and significant temperature variation create ideal conditions for active wood maturation — more dynamically than almost any other whisky region in the world. |
| 4 | Craft We double-distil in small 60-litre batches by hand. The result is a spirit with genuine individual character, not industrial consistency. |
On Age Statements
Six years here is not
six years anywhere else.
Age statements were developed in Scotland, for Scottish conditions. They became shorthand for quality because, in a cool and stable climate, more years in wood reliably means more complexity.
That equation does not translate directly to Tasmania. Our whiskies are released between six and eight years old — not because they are young, but because at that age they are genuinely ready.
The measure of a whisky is flavour. We release ours when the flavour is right.
“Tasmania is not trying to be Scotland. It is something new — and that is precisely why it matters.”
Battery Point Distillery
Our Story
Founded by a pioneer.
Built on a tradition.
Battery Point Distillery was founded in 2018 by Lloyd and Jan Clark, and makes its home in the historic 1874 Lenna of Hobart building — one of Hobart’s most significant heritage properties, overlooking the Derwent River estuary. The distillery was set up with the involvement of Jack Lark, one of the pioneering figures of the modern Australian whisky movement.
Head Distiller Luke Lawrence leads production, crafting each batch by hand using Tasmanian malted barley and pure local water, matured in carefully selected casks: sherry, tawny, port and bourbon.
The core range is always available. Limited releases are made only when the cask says it’s time.
